Celebrating – Aussie Artist – Tony Walker
Tony Walker has been one of our Aussie Artists selected in both 2018 and 2019 to represent Australian @ FabrianoInAcquarello – Italy ……….. he is a vibrant working artist traveling and showcasing his Work across a number of communities!
This month we are showcasing his travels and artwork – from Malaysia late 2018
A Sketch Walk in the Kinta Valley, Malaysia
Tony was very fortunate to be invited to accompany Kuala Lumpur Urban Sketchers group in November 2018 sketch journaling in Kampar and the Kinta Valley, Malaysia, and the surrounding historic tin mining locality led by Lee Kong Chin. The aim was to celebrate in sketches Malaysia’s long history as the major producer of tin – the ‘past glory of Kinta’.
The history spans early pick and shovel mining through to highly mechanized methods of the 1880’s to early 1900’s. Along with a massive expansion of tin mining, becoming the world’s biggest producer, the British built substantial housing, government and commercial buildings and transport network.
Today there are numerous towns and villages where ‘colonial’ British structures mingle with Chinese and local architecture. Restitution of post-mining land form and landscape has been occurring in recent years along with development of substantial tourist industry. All this provides the artist with an exciting spectrum of landscape, post-mining land form, urban scape, and cultural variety.
- Tony works principally with watercolour, pens and acrylic inks, frequently out of doors anywhere in the world and also in his Brisbane studio. In sketching, while he often paints in watercolour, another of his techniques employs ink drawings with fountain pen and acrylic ink rendering. He find this technique facilitates ‘getting it down’ rapidly on paper, capturing character and mood.
