SUMMARY:2 Days Workshop - To Explore and Paint In The Wilds of Wilsons Prom and Walkerville 'The Kilns' - with Artist - Wyn Vogel - 22nd and 23rd March 2025
DESCRIPTION:– The Walkerville Lime Kilns – A Rugged Coastline o History Since 1875!\nA Weekend to Explore Alternate Watercolour Techniques!\n \nOnly accessible on low tide – these heritage structures were the source of limestone for the building of Melbourne – Six kilns (numbered 1-6 from south to north) were constructed at Walkerville. Each kiln was about 40 feet deep\, brick lined and tapering to a narrow neck at the base\, where a grate opened into the back of a large shed. \nThe process of transforming chalk into lime involves heating it in a kiln to a high temperature\, a process known as calcination. This causes the calcium carbonate in the chalk to undergo a chemical reaction\, producing calcium oxide (quicklime) and releasing carbon dioxide gas. \nAt the peak of production\, around 1890\, up to eighty men were employed either directly or indirectly in the mining of lime. As these workers settled on the shores of Waratah Bay they built cottages for their wives and families and within a few years a busy township had developed with a Post Office\, School and General Store. It was reported that at the turn of the century the lime industry at Waratah supported fifty families. \nWalkerville sits at the northern entry to Wilson’s Promontory and the coast is rugged and beautiful!\n\n\nFor this Workshop we will explore the local scenery – the local floral and fauna and series of preliminary works that will hopefully form the basis of an Exhibition by Artist Wyn Vogel – towards the end of the year!\n\n\nWyn will work with you to share her insights\, her approach to construct of a painting and inclusion of the critical elements – nailing a story that has thrived since the 1800’s\n\n\nYou will discover how to mix your paints on paper not on a palette – the freedom of watercolour and pigment – the mix of light and shade – highlighted with the renown marks of Wyn’s ink nib pen!\n\n\nInspiration at Low Tide – Format of the Workshop Days\nWe will explore at low tide the structures at the foot of the cliffs along the base of Cape Liptrap Coastal Park – Waratah Bay and Walkerville itself – we will take sketches and photos and if the weather is good we can work Plein Air – if the weather closes in on us\, we have access to the local Hall and this will provide us with shelter in between our forages to find inspiration at low tide around the Kilns and along the rugged Coast line. \nAccommodation\nThese workshops have really been developed for some local Artists who have worked with Wyn in the past in Brisbane – however\, we are open to others to join us – \nIf you are keen to join us please contact Artist Wyn Vogel – for full details >>> https://www.fishlanestudios.com/contact/ – accommodation is not readily available and you may have to Google Search accommodation around Waratah Bay  \nMaterials to Bring\nBring a Picnic Lunch and a Mug\nThese are two (2) full day Workshops – from 10am to 3.30pm or there about – so bring a picnic lunch – tea and coffee are available – please bring your own bottles of water etc.\, \nMaterials to Bring With You:\n\nA reasonable size water container for your painting water\,\nA Backing board to tape your sample papers down (core board or similar from Bunnings) and tape to manage your paper – we don’t use an easel we tape the paper to the backing board so we can move the paper and tilt or turn as needed to manage your paint and water.\n\nPaper Needed\n\nAt least 3 full sheet Arches 300gsm Cold Pressed Watercolour Paper or a Pad at least A3 in size of 300gsm weight paper – it can be cold or hot pressed – Wyn uses cold pressed\nAnd some smaller sheets of watercolour paper to try out ideas – again experimental so these can be scraps from other Work if you have them!\n\nPAINTS | Watercolour Paint – Watercolour Pencils – Watercolour Inks – \nbut please bring whatever colours you have in your kit: \n\nUltramarine Blue\nIndigo\nCadmium Yellow – Deep\nPhthalo Blue\nRaw Sienna\nQuinacridone Gold\nOrganic Vermilion\nAlizarin Crimson and/or Deep Cadmium Red – or similar colours –\nPerylene Green is also a great colour – it is a Daniel Smith colour the other paints above are generally found in most brands and I don’t mind what brand you bring.\n\nBrushes – at least those below – \nbut please bring whatever brushes you have in your kit: \nAt Least 1 of each brush below – more will help you: \n\n1 each x 1/2 inch and 3/4inch Angle Shader\n1 x wide wash brush at least 2 inches in width – for wet work\, we recommend the 2 inch Art Spectrum Soft Varnish Brush – I would recommend you have at least 2 with you\, and\n1 x wide dry brush at least 2 inches in width – feel it with you hand and maker sure it is very soft Goat Hair recommended – for dry work –\n1 x Squirrel Needle point or Chinese style calligraphy brush for detailed line work and layering of your colours – we recommend No10 – NEEF Squirrel Needle Point – see the images below and on the cover photo for guidance!\n\nOther Tools:\n\n1 x old kitchen spray bottle – washed out and ready to have clean water to spray across your paints – I recommend an old ‘Windex’ Bottle of similar to give you a good spray of water.\na 2B pencil and if you would like a rubber\nHair dryer to dry your work between layers\n\n*** Don’t forget – there are not shops – come prepare to bring – BYO your own lunch – bring your mug – Tea and Coffee are available all day!\n      \nREFUND POLICY \n** refunds will be in full if we are notified 72 hours ahead of the Dates\, \n** we will withhold the card fee\, but refund bookings notified within 24 hours of the Workshops – however\, \n** if there is a no-show on the day without notification\, we will not refund the ticket at that time. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
